Vànvera

An espresso machine pods for domestic use

About

Vànvera is an espresso machine pod, designed for domestic use.

The Brief was provided by F-Lab and the focal point was

the creation of a “non – machine” that is not the classic appliance, but a product that is con- textualized, abstracted and exhibited in the domestic context.

Process

The starting point of my research was an analysis of how the structure of the house is changing in relation to how we live. I then investigated how customers choose new items to collect within their own “four walls”, starting from the research analysis carried out by D. Norman in Emotional Design.

Furthermore, I analyzed from a socio- semiotic perspective the theme of coffee as a cultural object.
A key takeaway from the research analysis highlights the role of coffee as a ritual that combines the pleasure of drinking a beloved beverage, with the opportunity of establishing new relationships, intensify human relations, by sharing feelings, emotions and ideas.

I then combined user research, trends analysis and technical knowledge to define the opportunity space for a new type of coffee machine.  From a design perspective, I got inspired by anthropomorphic, radical, iconic design artefacts.

Outcome

Vànvera is a coffee machine equipped with a touch screen through which you can make video calls. With Vànvera you can call other users with the same product while having a coffee with your friends and chat with them as if you were in a bar, shortening the real distances.

Nowadays, we have frenetic lives, we work and travel more and we have very little time to gather and connect with the many people in our networks.  For this reason, the aim of Vanvera is to transform the physical social experience of having a coffee into a digital (social) one.

Vànvera is only an access key to a new type of conviviality, a ‘ different experience’, in which the emphasis is on the user.
It is no longer a mere appliance but is a product able to “tell a story“ and reflect, faithfully, the personality of the owner.
